Scaling production to a multi-shift operation is a significant milestone for any manufacturing facility. However, running a factory 24 hours a day introduces a critical risk: shift-to-shift variations.

When the day shift and night shift operate with different subcultures or interpretations of the rules, product quality inevitably suffers. Here are the essential strategies for standardizing quality control and ensuring seamless handovers in a multi-shift manufacturing environment.

1. The Danger of the “Unofficial” Process

One of the biggest challenges in multi-shift operations is the development of “unofficial” processes. A night shift operator might find a shortcut that bypasses a quality check, or a day shift inspector might judge a defect differently than their counterpart.
